DENTAL IMPLANTS

What is a dental implant?

Think of dental implants as artificial tooth roots, similar in shape to screws. When dental implants are placed in your jawbone, they bond with your natural bone. They become a sturdy base for supporting one or more artificial teeth, called crowns.
A connector, known as an abutment, is placed on top of the dental implant to hold and support your crowns. The crowns are custom-made to match your natural teeth and fit your mouth.
Implants can be used to replace a single tooth, a few missing teeth, or to replace all the teeth in the mouth.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

If you are missing one or more teeth, you are a perfect candidate to be evaluated for dental implant placement.

The fundamental element in dental implant success is the quantity and quality of bone available at the implant site to promote fusion to the bone. If necessary this can be addressed by bone grafting to add supplemental bone tissue at the implant site. In order to determine a treatment plan for dental implant placement, please schedule an evaluation at our office.

How long does it take to replace teeth with an implant?

Each patient is different. After completing the necessary diagnostics, your surgeon should provide you with a treatment plan including the estimated amount of time to complete the process.

Sometimes, additional bone is needed to support the implants, and your oral surgeon can talk to you about adding bone where it may be needed. Total treatment time depends on your needs, medical and dental history, the health of the supporting bone in your jaw, and the technique and materials that will be used. It can be as short as a few months, or more than a year for more complex conditions.

Are implants safe?

Dental implants, which have been used for half a century, are safe and effective. As in any medical procedure, however, there can be complications. Choosing a knowledgeable, well-trained implant surgeon will help minimize complications and ensure skillful handling of any problems, should they arise. It is important that you and your surgeon review your health history and any habits which could affect the success of your recommended care, such as smoking, so that you are fully informed about the benefits and risks involved.

Does it hurt to get implants?

With the sedation techniques available at the time of treatment and helpful instructions for home care, many people report that they feel better than anticipated. Often, they return to work and daily activities the next day. While there may be some discomfort and bruising, this typically lasts only a short time.

How long do implants last?

Modern dental implants have been used successfully for over 30 years. They are the strongest devices available to support replacement teeth – and even better, they allow these new teeth to feel, look and function naturally.
